Phase 1: The Breadcrumbs

Story 4: Too Fat for the Army

✳️ Exceeded my BMI by exactly 3%.

✳️ Granted a tight 30-day window.

✳️ No Google. No YouTube. No external advice.

✳️ I lost EXACTLY 3% body fat in 30 days.

I realized that the next logical step for me looked like joining the Australian Defence Force (ADF). I wasted no time at all in submitting my application form. I passed the initial medical examination as well as the aptitude test. Things were going well.

But then I hit a snag at the final hurdle when I failed the final medical examination. I exceeded my Body Mass Index (BMI) by 3%.

What the... I was completely devastated!

But then I remembered an inspiring mantra from one of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s books: “Don’t tell me it can’t be done!” As I pondered these empowering words, I felt an unwavering determination rising up from within me.

I can do this!! I’m not giving up on my desire.

I asked the ADF if they would grant me 30 days to lower my BMI by 3% and thankfully they agreed. I became an obsessed woman on a mission.

I need to mention at this point that I didn’t seek out any advice on what actions I should take to lose 3% body fat in 30 days. I didn’t read any books. I didn’t consult Dr. Google or YouTube because this technology wasn’t available to me during that time. I just did the things that felt good for me.

The first action I took was to go to a local gym just 2 kms down the road from me. I set an intention to wake up naturally at 6am and walk to the gym six days a week to work out. Sunday was my only day off. My fitness training consisted of alternating between aerobics classes one day and then interval circuit training the next.

I also started running every second afternoon. I knew that once enlisted in the ADF, I’d be required to pass a BFA (basic fitness assessment), which meant running 2.4km in under 13:30 mins for a female under 25 years old.

I did later discover during my 3 months of basic training at Kapooka, that the BFA had been changed to 5km in under 27 mins for a female. But that’s an interesting story for another time which also required unwavering determination on my part.

My first fitness goal was to be able to run the entire 2.4km without needing to stop and walk. Then, once I’d hit that goal, I focused upon the next goal: increasing my speed until I nailed 2.4kms in under 13:30 mins.

At the same time as I was working on my fitness, I also made drastic changes to my diet. Here is the exact eating plan that I implemented:

  • Breakfast: 2 wholegrain Vitabrits with full cream milk, one banana, and a couple of tablespoons of strawberry yogurt.
  • Lunch: Big salad with cheese, low-fat dressing and one multigrain Ryvita crispbread with a tablespoon of low-fat cream cheese and Vegemite. I also included one boiled egg for 4 days a week.
  • Dinner: Small bowl of tinned fruit salad in natural juice.
  • Supper: 2 cups of hot, full-cream milk.

I ate this way every single day. I also quit smoking cold turkey, stopped drinking caffeine, and stopped drinking alcohol. I found all of these actions to be extremely easy too, and there’s a really significant reason why—which I’ll reveal in due course.

I also want to add that visualisation played a huge role too. I kept imagining my body the way I wanted it to be.

I asked a personal trainer at the gym to record my body fat percentages at the start of my 30 days and again at the end. And to my utter amazement... I lost EXACTLY 3% body fat in 30 days!!!

It felt really lucky for me to get exactly what I wanted, but there’s no luck at play here. I had inner help all along and I didn’t even know it.
